Choosing the right decking timber is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your outdoor space. In Brisbane and Gold Coast's subtropical climate — with intense UV, heavy rain and high humidity — not all timbers are created equal.
Merbau (Kwila)
Merbau is the most popular hardwood decking choice in South-East Queensland, and for good reason. It's naturally termite-resistant, incredibly dense and has a rich reddish-brown colour that deepens with age.
Pros: Excellent durability (25+ year lifespan), naturally resistant to rot and termites, beautiful grain, moderately priced for a premium hardwood.
Cons: Tannin bleed when new (can stain concrete), requires oiling every 12-18 months, sourced from overseas.
Best for: Family decks, entertaining areas, pool surrounds.
Spotted Gum
An Australian native hardwood, Spotted Gum is one of the toughest timbers available. Its natural oils make it incredibly weather-resistant — perfect for exposed decks.
Pros: Extremely hard (Janka rating 11), stunning natural colour variation, Australian-grown and sustainably sourced, minimal tannin bleed.
Cons: Higher cost than Merbau, can be harder to work with due to density, may require pre-drilling.
Best for: High-end residential decks, commercial projects, pool decking.
Composite Decking
Modern composite decking has come a long way. Made from recycled wood fibres and plastic, it offers the look of timber with almost zero maintenance.
Pros: No oiling, sanding or sealing required, won't splinter or warp, colour consistency, 25-year manufacturer warranty.
Cons: Higher upfront cost, can get hot underfoot in direct sun, doesn't have the authentic feel of real timber.
Best for: Low-maintenance homes, rental properties, families with young children.
Our Recommendation
For most Brisbane and Gold Coast homes, we recommend Merbau as the best balance of beauty, durability and value. If budget allows and you want a premium Australian timber, Spotted Gum is exceptional.
For homeowners who want a set-and-forget deck, composite is a smart choice — especially in rental properties or holiday homes where regular oiling isn't practical.
